Households across the country are finding their broadband connections pushed to the limit as families in lockdown try to work, educate and entertain themselves online.
During a recent video-conference, MP Julie Elliott made a plea to the culture secretary for a faster rollout of fibre broadband for her Sunderland constituents. As she was doing so, her own broadband connection failed, something the chairman of the DCMS committee described as “ironic”.
In theory, 95% of premises should be able to access superfast broadband but take-up of services remains low. This might be because people find their current speed sufficient for their needs, do not want to pay or simply haven’t got round to upgrading.
For those wanting to upgrade now, there could be a wait. BT told the BBC is was prioritising new broadband connections for the “vulnerable and those most in need”.
According to Ofcom, 189,000 properties are on speeds of 10Mbps (megabits per second) download and 1Mbps upload or less - for both fixed and wireless.
Adelana Carty, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, thinks it is too low for lockdown. "Some video-calling services say they only require broadband speeds of 1.2Mbps, but at this level the picture quality is likely to be extremely patchy and the audio may cut in and out - especially if there are many people on the call.
"Streaming TV services like Netflix say you need a 3Mbps connection for standard quality, and 5Mbps for HD, but you’re likely to find that the picture is constantly buffering at these speeds.
"Connection issues also arise when multiple devices use the internet simultaneously, so if required, it may be worth setting up a rota, especially when it comes to streaming or gaming online.

Image caption On Sam Kirkpatrick’s street internet services are painfully slowSuch a rota may be the only option for Sam Kirkpatrick, who lives in rural Northern Ireland, and who says the idea of sharing the internet with his wife and two teenagers is “simply out of the question”.
"On a good day, my broadband runs at about 2Mbps (not a typo - I genuinely mean two). I’ve seen various fibre rollout plans over the years and my postcode has been included but we’ve not been upgraded yet.
“We have paid for an additional 4G service for a couple of years now, which is much faster when it works but much less reliable and more prone to contention/packet dropping than the fixed line. The quality of it has definitely degraded noticeably since lockdown started.”
Without it the family would “be in trouble”, he said, but it does mean expensive monthly bills.
Mr Kirkpatrick is a software engineering manager, and is now working from home full-time.
“Much of my role is video calls and it struggles a bit at that stage. Often, I’ll have to disable video and rely on audio only to save bandwidth. Or even forget about the calls and try to use messaging instead, which just isn’t the same. Downloading large payloads, which I have to do often, is a challenge.”
Image copyright Oleksandr Pupko
Image caption One superfast broadband user told the BBC he should be getting speeds of up to 100Mbps but often got just 25Mbps according to speed testsThe others in the house have to rely on the 4G.
"This gets us by for schoolwork and my wife’s work. Even then, we’re limited to maybe one person streaming at any one time.
“It’s a regular occurrence in our house to hear shouted: ‘Can everybody stop using the internet for a while, please?’ so someone can download something or watch a video. On occasion, you do just have to give up and try again later or forget about it.”
‘Missing out on the craic’The BBC was also contacted by a woman, living in a similar part of the world. She wanted to remain anonymous but pointed out that it was not just work and schooling that was affected by poor connectivity.
“Internet accessibility is difficult in rural Northern Ireland at the best of times but in lockdown with increased usage and reliance on the internet, connecting with family and friends is tough and we sometimes have to miss out on the craic because the infrastructure just isn’t there,” she said.
“It’s an additional and unnecessary strain on mental health and wellbeing when we are being asked to distance ourselves for the greater good.”
And it is not just rural locations that are suffering. Even in a city like London, people can experience problems.
Tips for improving speed-
where possible do not use wi-fi - connect devices with an ethernet cable
configure the router to use different names for the two frequencies, 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and then re-teach devices the credentials for the 5GHz -
check the location of the router - if it is buried on a bookcase, surrounded by books the clutter could block the signal
-
microwave ovens interfere with wi-fi signal so don’t cook a microwave lunch while on a Zoom call
-
if everyone is trying to access the internet, consider investing in a wi-fi booster that allow the signal to travel further
-
mesh network add-ons may improve coverage but usually carry a monthly subscription
-
don’t move your office to a quiet part of the house without checking the speeds first, using an online speed checker
-
if speed generally is significantly lower than the speed you were promised, phone your provider to argue the case for an upgrade
-
download films to phones and tablets, ideally just before bed when not everyone is using the internet
Jack Maddox recently moved into a flat in the technology hub of Shoreditch, east London but says the best connection he could get installed was 15Mbps, on offer from Sky.
“It regularly sits in the seven to 10 range. I couldn’t believe the lack of fibre options after moving into this relatively new flat,” he told the BBC.
“It makes trying to do client video calls or even ones to family and friends infuriating. I often end up moving closer to the window and tethering my phone, which isn’t great either.”
For some though, internet speed is not a problem at all. Jersey already offers full fibre to all homes and now its internet providers have decided to upgrade everyone to 1Gbps (gigabit per second), entirely free of charge “for the duration of the pandemic”.

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafeezur Rehman announced that the PTA would be whitelisting VPNs, limiting availability to selected ones in Pakistan.
“Currently, only 30% of people in Pakistan use VPNs,” Rehman noted, emphasizing that VPNs can be blocked.
He made these remarks during a Senate’s Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat meeting chaired by Rana Mahmoodul Hasan in Islamabad.
The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has been suspended in Pakistan since February 17 due to national security concerns but remains accessible via VPNs.
The PTA chairman also stated that the ban on X would be lifted whenever the government instructs them to do so. Despite VPN access, the usage of X in Pakistan has decreased by 70%.
Rehman mentioned that approximately 56% of the population has internet access and that the 5G auction is expected to take place in March-April next year.
Addressing the issue of content creators paying taxes on income from international ads, the PTA chairman said there is currently no legislation regarding this matter.
He informed lawmakers that only 7% of complaints lodged on the platform in the past three months had been addressed, noting that X has the lowest compliance ratio among all social media platforms.
Rehman clarified that social media platforms are blocked only at the government’s request. He added that the PTA contacts the platforms about any complaints related to social media content that violates Pakistani law.

The Institutional Reforms Committee has released new recommendations aimed at restructuring the Ministry of IT and Telecom.
Key proposals include shutting down the Telecom Foundation and privatizing its subsidiaries. Established in 1991 under The Charitable Endowment Act, 1890, the Telecom Foundation has provided welfare services for employees of PTCL, PTA, NTC, and FAB through its telecom and engineering services.
The committee also recommends a significant restructuring of the National Information Technology Board (NITB), suggesting it evolve into a dynamic learning organization by partnering with private service providers and adopting an outsourced model to enhance efficiency and innovation.
Additionally, the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) is advised to increase its revenue to at least Rs. 1 billion and reduce reliance on federal funding, with occasional investments from the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP).
The committee supports the continuation of the Universal Service Fund, Virtual University, and Electronic Certification Accreditation Council in their current roles. For Ignite – National Technology Fund, it recommends continuing operations but allowing private sector involvement once market failures are addressed.
The Ministry of IT and Telecom is now preparing an action plan to implement these recommendations.

The launch of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max highlighted a key difference beyond size and price: the Pro Max’s exclusive telephoto lens. However, recent reports suggest this gap will close with the release of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max camera system. Will the 16 [-]
Pro match it?
APPLE
Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the tetraprism lens, currently unique to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, will bring back the photographic consistency of earlier models by incorporating a 5x zoom equivalent lens in both iPhone 16 Pro versions.
In a Medium post, Kuo mentions Largan, Apple’s primary lens supplier. He states, “Apple is Largan’s largest customer, and Largan is also Apple’s largest lens supplier. Therefore, the quote likely refers to the fact that the new iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will have a tetraprism camera in 2H24 (while only the iPhone 15 Pro Max had this camera in 2H23).”
Interestingly, the report notes that there will be no changes in the tetraprism camera this fall compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. “The tetraprism camera specifications for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are identical to those for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the Largan shipment price has not changed,” it says. Kuo interprets this as Largan’s competitive edge, as typically, Apple would negotiate a lower price for a second-year supply of the same component.
Currently, the iPhone 15 Pro Max offers superior telephoto zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro only provides a 3x zoom equivalent. When asked last September why this disparity existed, Apple attributed it to the smaller size of the iPhone 15 Pro, which couldn’t accommodate the larger zoom lens.
The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models are rumored to be slightly larger, potentially allowing for the 5x zoom lens. According to a new supplier report in DigiTimes, “Largan supplied periscope lenses for the premium iPhone 15 Pro Max launched last year. This year, more models in the upcoming iPhone lineup will feature periscope lenses. GSEO is likely to join as a new supplier for this year’s iPhones.”
This isn’t the first speculation on the topic. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TFI Securities suggested in October 2023 that the iPhone 16 Pro would include Apple’s tetraprism lens, which is aesthetically designed to look nearly identical to other lenses. Apple’s attention to such detail is unmatched.
While two reports don’t confirm a fact, they do indicate a promising trend. Including the 5x zoom lens in the iPhone 16 Pro would be a sensible move for Apple, given its popularity and the demand among iPhone 15 Pro users who were deterred by the Pro Max’s size and cost.
Aligning the cameras of the Pro and Pro Max models in the next generation would mark a strategic improvement, and it seems Apple is heading in that direction.
A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shares that the new MacBook Pro’s will be announced in the months from September to November.
The period is extrapolated from the expectation that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro’s will enter production in Q3. The pair of computers were expected to launch earlier but was delayed because of miniLED display complications.
Those complications were reportedly sorted with new miniLED supplier Osram Opto Semiconductors.
Bloomberg: 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro’s coming in September-November
Still, mass production of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro’s is expected to be delayed so the machines might not be widely available for purchase until early 2022.
The new Pro’s will feature a completely new design, miniLED displays, a powerful new M1X chip with up to 10 cores (8 big and 2 efficient cores), up from the 4 + 4 core design of the M1, and an increase in GPU cores, at least 16, possibly even 32.

MEDLI2 was one among the crucial technologies onboard the rover’s protective aeroshell that helped document the entry, descent, and landing of the spacecraft.
[floatRight][image: kZDf0qL.png][/floatRight]
Editor’s note: This story has been updated and text has been added to the conclusion.
"Tango delta. Touchdown confirmed. Perseverance safely on the surface of Mars, able to begin seeking the signs of past life.” For quite six years, the Mars Entry, Descent, and Landing Instrumentation 2 (MEDLI2) team waited to listen to these words.
NASA’s Perseverance rover successfully landed Feb. 18, 2021, beginning its robotic exploration of the Mars . MEDLI2 was one among the crucial technologies on the rover’s protective aeroshell that helped document the entry, descent, and landing (EDL) of the spacecraft. All of the MEDLI2 data was stored on Perseverance for transmission to Earth after a successful landing.
MEDLI2’s role was to gather critical data about the tough environment during Perseverance’s entry through the planet’s atmosphere. It included three sorts of sensors – thermocouples, heat flux sensors, and pressure transducers – that measured extreme heat and pressure during entry. It also contained electronics and hardware for recording the thermal and pressure loads experienced during entry and thru the parachute deployment.

MEDLI2 used its measurements to work out the warmth ing and atmospheric forces that occurred on the heat shield and back shell. Together, these two components structure the aeroshell, which housed and guarded the Perseverance rover during the cruise to Mars and EDL.
MEDLI2 was powered on five hours before the “7 Minutes of Terror,” or final 7-minute descent to Mars. This provided time for MEDLI2’s electronics to stabilize temperature and measure the initial conditions before entry. The team was relieved to receive the indication that MEDLI2 was successfully activated. The team continued to watch the incoming data throughout this five-hour coast phase before entry.
The majority of the MEDLI2 sensors and therefore the primary electronics were mounted on the Mars 2020 protective covering . About 10 seconds after the supersonic parachute deployed, MEDLI2 was powered down for the last time because it had completed its job. Since it’s critical for the warmth shield to be separated to permit the Perseverance rover to be extracted from the entry vehicle, it had been required that MEDLI2 be turned off a couple of seconds before the separation to stop any electric power issues. The harness connecting the warmth shield and back shell was then severed by the firing of a pyro-cutter, and therefore the protective covering was dropped.
“We didn’t find any issues with the separation,” said Henry Wright, MEDLI2 project manager at NASA’s Langley research facility in Hampton, Virginia. “The protective covering cleanly separated from the Mars 2020 entry vehicle. The MEDLI2 hardware was clearly visible on the warmth shield because it fell toward the surface of Mars. Job well done!”
Perseverance also returned “critical event data” in real time during the EDL. It included a subset of the MEDLI2 data which allowed observations into what the entry vehicle was experiencing because the entry was happening. Three days after Perseverance’s successful landing, the remaining MEDLI2 data was transmitted back to Earth, and therefore the next phase of the project began: data analysis and performance reconstruction.
“The returned data is fascinating. It’s like having a bird’s eye view of what’s happening to the aeroshell because it flies through Martian skies. The MEDLI2 sensor signals are so clear we could immediately detect interesting phenomenon and crucial events” said Todd White, MEDLI2 PI at NASA’s Ames research facility in California’s Silicon Valley .
Data collected from MEDLI2 also provides measurements which will be wont to determine the properties of the atmosphere the Mars 2020 entry vehicle flew through. MEDLI2 provides essential EDL observation data to know what proportion margin remained on the Perseverance entry along side data which will be wont to improve prediction models and tools for future missions.
Taking a Deeper check out the info
Heat shield insulation temperatures were recorded throughout the entire entry phase and were according to the entry predictions. the height measured temperature within the protective covering during the entry was 1,830 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1,000 degrees Celsius. That correlates to an estimated peak protective covering outer temperature of about 2,550 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1,400 degrees Celsius.
MEDLI2 also used its embedded thermocouples to work out what proportion of the warmth shield protective insulation may have burned away or ablated. All of the thermocouples survived the entry heating pulse, indicating the warmth shield ablation was very low. This observation might be wont to reevaluate the quantity of insulation that’s needed on a protective covering to potentially reduce the general entry vehicle mass.
Surface pressures were also measured throughout an equivalent phase with a peak surface pressure of the warmth shield matching the team’s entry predictions. MEDLI2 picked different sensors to specialise in accurately capturing different flight regimes. One sensor covered the entire range of the utmost surface pressures. The remaining six protective covering pressure measurements had a variety to more accurately capture the conditions during the supersonic flight regime (from about five times the speed of sound on Mars through the deployment of the supersonic parachute). These sensors, combined with onboard inertial measurements, allows additional insight into how the entry vehicle performs when the impacts of atmospheric density variations and winds are more pronounced. The MEDLI2 pressure data are going to be wont to improve the modeling approach for future EDL missions.
MEDLI2 included sensors on the rear shell of the Mars 2020 entry vehicle, a neighborhood that so far has had limited observations. Surface pressure, insulation temperature, and direct surface heating measurements comprised the rear shell sensor suite. Knowledge of the surface pressure on the rear of the entry vehicle contributes to a discount within the size of the landing footprint. Back shell insulation temperature data was within the initial predictions, which may be wont to reduce the modeling uncertainty. like the warmth shield insulation, understanding the rear shell insulation temperature performance could lead on to a discount within the back shell insulation mass. Direct surface heating measurements of the rear shell also contribute to reducing the uncertainty within the predictive models.
MEDLI2 data also included a variety of “housekeeping” measurements. These included variety of compensating temperature measurements of critical science sensors. Much of this housekeeping data is additionally of keen interest to the Mars 2020 team to assist in their own EDL reconstruction efforts. a part of the housekeeping measurements included sensors internal to the MEDLI2 support electronics (voltages, internal temperatures, MEDLI2 heartbeat/clock, etc.).
The MEDLI2 team will still analyze the info for subsequent six months, refining NASA’s understanding of the Mars atmosphere, the acute conditions of entry, and the way well the Mars 2020 aeroshell protected the rover. These lessons are going to be immediately useful for subsequent Mars missions, and even missions headed for Titan.
Langley led the MEDLI2 instrument development and project management. NASA’s Ames research facility in California’s Silicon Valley and NASA’s reaction propulsion Laboratory in Southern California contributed to MEDLI2. NASA’s Game Changing Development program within the Space Technology Mission Directorate funded the technology development.

Windows 10X was originally meant for foldable and dual-screen devices, but last year Microsoft announced it was reworking the software for single screen PCs. The result looks to be an experience that will provide users with access to Microsoft services in a more affordable package.
We’re expecting the first Windows 10X devices to launch later this year, but an exact timeframe hasn’t been revealed. Similarly, we’re not sure how much these devices will cost, but if we had to venture a guess they’ll be in the $400 to $700 range.
In Windows Central’s video, we get a good idea of what using Windows 10 will be like, from the reworked taskbar to running progressive web apps (PWA). The video demonstrates some of the software’s settings, the process of installing a PWA, and running apps side-by-side. It’s an interesting glimpse at what Microsoft has planned for those who want a more lightweight, tablet-esque experience.
Windows 10X isn’t something you’ll be able to upgrade to. Rather, the software will come pre-installed on new machines similar to laptops that run Chrome OS. If you’ve been tempted by a Chromebook but are embedded in Microsoft’s ecosystem, the arrival of Windows 10X will be exactly what you’re looking for.

As social marketing experts, we’ve been asked so many time this question by clients.
“So Google Ads vs Facebook Ads"
1. Which is better for my business?”
And almost every time we have a similar response – it depends!
Google and Facebook are great, and yes one can be better than the other depending on your business, your audience, and your goals. Let’s take a look, shall we?
The Most common Debate on Google Ads vs Facebook Ads
We understand that small businesses often have a low marketing budget and deciding where to use their ad spend money can be extremely challenging. Let alone completely understanding the difference between Google Ads vs Facebook Ads. Which is why we are taking it upon ourselves to solve and put out some clarity to this debate once and for all. And in the process, help fellow business owners decide which one gets the best return on their marketing investment.
Before jumping straight to the part where we tell you which of them one gets you a far better ROI within the epic battle of Google Ads vs Facebook Ads, let’s start by watching a number of the most differences between the 2 .
What are Google Ads?
The advances in technology over the years has given us as marketers and even consumers more choices than we could have possibly imagined in our lifetime. As a result, it’s changed how we discover , deliver, and receive information. it’s even changed the way to buy and buy products today.
One such internet company who has not only embraced change but helped cultivate it’s Google. Founded in 1998, Google may be a program that’s employed by nearly 70% of online users to look for love or money and everything under the sun. Literally. Thousands of best results concerning products, tips, videos, local businesses and far more during a fraction of a second. Google today processes quite 40,000 search queries every second, quite 3 billion per day and a touch over a trillion per annum . And it’s shown this consistent growth since the first 2000. Amazon says it will produce hundreds of thousands of face shields for medics and sell them at cost price in the US.
The internet giant said engineers from its drone and hardware divisions had been tasked with developing the product.
At first, it will sell them to healthcare professionals, before making them available to all Amazon customers.
Amazon is not the first major US firm to use its resources to produce personal protective equipment (PPE).
Apple began sending face shields to hospitals in March. Space X, HP and Ford also used their manufacturing resources to make and donate face shields and other types of protective equipment.
Amazon said that it had donated 10,000 face shields in the US and was “on track” to deliver a further 20,000.
But its plan to sell them at low prices on its website will make them available to the general public, something other firms have not done.
A look on Amazon’s marketplace on Thursday showed face shields sold by independent sellers were priced between $12 (£9.80) and $35.
Once Amazon makes its mask available to all its customers, it could drive the price down significantly.
The online retail giant has faced criticism for undercutting the prices of independent retailers on its sites, but anti-trust experts say its efforts to help in this crisis will likely offset those concerns.
“People who are concerned about Amazon’s predatory behaviour might be concert but more people will be happy Amazon is making sure these are lower cost at a time of crisis,” said Michael Kades, director of markets and competition at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth.
Amazon’s design
The company said it based its designs on a face shield developed by a community of 3D printing enthusiasts in Washington.
After making some changes, its designs had been approved by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Engineers from Amazon’s drone division specialising in hardware design created a new design within a week that improved the quality of the materials to allow them to be reusable and added an enhanced snap feature to keep the shield in-place to make them safer.
The engineers also amended the geometry of the shields to reduce sharp edges that could snag clothing or hair, thinned the forehead band to reduce pressure on a person’s forehead, and drastically improved print time making them quicker to manufacture.
Amazon’s Brad Porter wrote in a blog post: “Because of the design innovations and the capabilities of our supply chain, we are confident we will be able to list them at a significantly lower price - almost a third of the cost - than all other reusable face shields currently available to frontline workers.”
The internet giant is also making its designs - known as the origami design and brimmed design - open source so that the shields could be 3D printed by anyone.
Both the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the British Standards Institution (BSI) have warned that homemade and 3D printed face shields do not always protect healthcare workers’ faces from exposure to the coronavirus.
But the global shortage of PPE has led to an increasing number of frontline medical workers crafting homemade equipment.
Amazon did not say whether it would provide the masks to workers at its warehouse who have reported a lack of safety equipment during the coronavirus pandemic.

KARACHI: Last week, Facebook appointed 20 people from round the world to serve on what is going to effectively be the social media network’s “Supreme Court” for speech, issuing rulings on what quite posts are going to be allowed and what should be taken down.
The list features a former prime minister, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and a number of other constitutional law experts and rights advocates, including the Pakistani lawyer and founding father of Digital Rights Foundation (DRF), Nighat Dad.
The creation of an oversight board by a social media company isn’t only a primary for internet regulation, but also for Pakistan because the country is now on the worldwide tech map with Ms Dad’s inclusion.
While it’s set a replacement model for accountability on content management, to what extent will it shape the company’s policies?

Selection of cases
The board will give users an opportunity to appeal against any wrongful removal of their content on Facebook and Instagram. Although, the board will only review a fraction of these appeals as a user must first exhaust Facebook’s appeals before they will involve the board.
According to the board’s leadership, the panel will specialise in the “most challenging” content issues for Facebook, including in areas like hate speech, harassment and protecting people’s safety and privacy.
Oversight board will issue rulings on what quite posts are going to be allowed and what should be taken down
Besides user appeals, it’ll even be ready to hear cases that are referred by Facebook. Facebook will directly refer cases to the board that are significant and difficult.
Significant, as defined within the bylaws, means the content in question involves real-world impact and issues that are important for public discourse.
Difficult means the content raises questions on current policies or their enforcement, with strong arguments on each side for either removing or leaving up the content under review. The board has sole discretion to simply accept or reject cases that are referred through this process.
Facebook has long faced criticism for high-profile content moderation issues, including removal of pro-Kashmir posts, hate speech in Myanmar against the Rohingya and other Muslims.
Recently, the corporate included guidelines on pandemic content to its list of community standards. However, with the platform now relying largely on automated moderation, anti-vaccine activists and conspiracy theorists have already become adept at gaming the platform’s rules.
Unless its policies and moderation improve, the board is a smaller amount likely to cause major change because the final judgment are going to be in accordance with Facebook’s community standards.
Another challenge limiting its efforts is that the global scale at it which it operates. Facebook said the board members chosen collectively have lived in additional than 27 countries and speak a minimum of 29 languages.
Globally, there are 2.5 billion people using the platform in additional than 100 languages.
Regulation in Pakistan
It is important to say that not all content are often submitted to the board for its review.
The board’s decisions are going to be binding “unless implementation could violate the law”, Facebook said.
This is the only reason why the board’s addition is a smaller amount likely to vary much for internet regulation in countries with repressive cyber laws, like Pakistan.
During the primary half 2019, Pakistan reported the very best volume of content (31 per cent) to Facebook.
In its transparency report, Facebook said it restricted 5,690 items within Pakistan. None of the 5,690 items from the Facebook’s transparency report were removed for violating its content policies but under Pakistan’s cybercrime law.
The government has also introduced the web Citizens Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules, 2020.
Under the new rules, social media platforms are going to be required to get rid of any ‘unlawful content’ acknowledged to them in writing or electronically signed email within 24 hours, and in emergency cases within six hours. With the web harm rules in effect, if as an example , the authority now specifies 2,000 items to Facebook for removal, the platform are going to be required to completely suits it.
“Ultimately, Facebook has got to respect local law in every country it operates in, so governments are liberal to introduce laws and Facebook, and therefore the board, would need to follow those laws,” a spokesperson for the overview board told Dawn.
Account suspensions not included
Initially, the board will only review individual pieces of content, like specific posts, photos, videos and comments on Facebook and Instagram.
The scope will expand within the future to incorporate other forms of content, for instance content that has been left up, also as pages, profiles, groups or events.
Last year, Facebook removed 103 pages, groups and accounts on both Facebook and Instagram as a part of a network that originated in Pakistan. during a blogpost on the takedown, Facebook said it had found that the network was linked to employees of Pakistani military.
The spokesperson said the accounts and pages removed over ‘coordinated inauthentic behaviour’ on Facebook won’t be reviewed by the panel for now as Facebook already partnered with “independent people” to review and document its CIB enforcement actions and therefore the results were an outcome of weeks or months of investigations by its teams.
Dad’s role
According to the board, members don’t represent individual countries when making decisions.
Each case identified by the board’s case-selection committee are going to be assigned to a five-member panel, four picked randomly from the board at large and one “from among those board members who are from the region which the content primarily affects”.
“A five-member panel will deliberate over a case of content implicating Pakistan would come with a minimum of one member from Central and South Asia, though this might not necessarily be Nighat Dad,” a board spokesperson told Dawn.
As a part of vetting, new board members (including Ms Dad) are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest, the board added.
Regarding Ms Dad’s advocacy in Pakistan, the spokesperson said the DRF founder will not be advocating with Facebook on to take specific policy positions and can also not have an avenue for escalating content to the corporate as a digital rights activist, it said.
“That said, others at Digital Rights Foundation (DRF), will remain engaged with Facebook — completely break away Nighat and her work on the Oversight Board,” the OB representative added.
HONG KONG: Facebook has apologised for its role within the deadly communal unrest that shook Sri Lanka two years ago after an investigation found that hate speech and rumours spread on the platform may have led to violence against Muslims.
The riots in early 2018 erupted as anti-Muslim anger was whipped abreast of social media, forcing the Sri Lankan government to impose a state of emergency and block access to Facebook.
The tech giant commissioned a search into the part it’s going to have played, and investigators said incendiary content on Facebook may have led to violence against Muslims.
“We deplore the misuse of our platform,” Facebook said during a statement to Bloomberg News after the findings were released on Tuesday. “We recognise, and apologise for, the very real human rights impacts that resulted.” a minimum of three people were killed and 20 injured within the 2018 unrest, during which mosques and Muslim businesses were burned, mainly within the central a part of the Sinhalese Buddhist-majority nation.
