Upon completion of this assignment, students will be able to understand the Conflict Theory by Karl Marx and Max Weber’s Social Action and its types.
Background:
Question 1:
Karl Marx is considered the most influential socialist thinker of the 19th century. He is well known for the Conflict Theory that has been used to examine several aspects of society that are built upon class conflict. Keeping in view the economic, philosophical and sociological aspects of Marx’s work:

a) Describe Karl Marx’s Conflict theory in your own words. (4)
b) Analyze the Healthcare and Medical institutional system in Pakistan in the light of Karl Marx’s conflict theory of differentiation between classes with the help of examples. Give your own views and opinion. (6)

Also give references of the online sources that you will consult. (2)

Question 2:

The core of Max Weber’s work was based on Social Action and its types. He studied how these types of actions may come into conflict for specific individuals. For this, Weber pointed out four types of ideal social action.

Identify the type of social action described by Max Weber in each of the following
examples.

1. Soldiers protecting their country at the boarders.
2. An aspirant caught into fight with the invigilator of the examination.
3. Not smoking in front of elders.
4. Performing efficiently for an upgrade in the existing job.
   Marking Scheme: 4 * 2 = 8
