Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif: If We Hadnât Been Cautious, India Would Have Lost Ten Aircraft Instead of Five
Pakistanâs Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stated that Pakistan was aware of Indiaâs plans in advance and the Pakistani military was prepared to respond at any moment, knowing when Indian aircraft would take off and when to intercept them and drop them into the sea.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Wednesday, he claimed that last night India launched an attack with full preparation, involving 80 aircraft.
Shehbaz Sharif said, âOur forces were ready 24/7, knowing when the enemyâs planes would take off and when we would intercept them and throw them into the sea.â
He further added, âIf we had not been cautious, India would have lost ten aircraft instead of just five.â
He mentioned, âThose who claimed that Pakistan was behind in conventional warfare got their answer last night.â
The Prime Minister stated that among the Indian aircraft shot down were three Rafale jets, emphasizing that India had taken great pride in these Rafale aircraft.
Shehbaz Sharif said, âPakistan, a country of 240 million people, is a nuclear power.â He noted that after this response, other countries would look toward Pakistan and seek help.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that on the night of April 29 and 30, the Pakistan Air Force had blocked communication from Indian Rafale jets, leaving India confused and forcing them to return to Srinagar.
He concluded, âLast night, India thought it could attack Pakistan in the dark, hiding like in the past. But thanks to the blessings of Allah and the prayers of the 240 million people of Pakistan, our armed forces gave a decisive response to Indiaâs attack, turning this dark night into a moonlit one.â

If a nuclear attack occurs, its effects can be extremely devastating. However, by taking immediate and correct safety measures, the chances of survival and minimizing damage can significantly increase. Below is a detailed explanation of what to do in such a situation:
⸝
- Initial Signs of a Nuclear Explosion
⢠A bright flash of light that can blind the eyes.
⢠A loud blast sound followed by a shockwave.
⢠A âmushroom cloudâ may appear in the sky.
⸝
- Immediate Actions (The First 10 to 15 Minutes Are Critical)
a) Drop to the Ground Immediately:
⢠If youâre near the blast and the shockwave hasnât reached you yet, lie flat on the ground.
⢠Face down, cover your head with your hands.
⢠Stay away from windows â glass shards can fly and cause injury.b) Keep Your Eyes Closed:
⢠The nuclear flash can cause permanent eye damage.c) Hold Your Breath or Cover Your Nose and Mouth:
⢠After the initial shock, the air may contain radioactive particles.
⢠Breathing them in can be dangerous.⸝
- Seek Immediate Shelter:
a) If possible, go into a solid building or basement:
⢠Concrete and earth walls help block radiation.
⢠Underground spaces (basements) are best.b) If youâre outdoors, move away from open areas:
⢠Cars, buses, or huts do not provide protection.
⢠Dig a trench in the ground, lie inside it, cover your head, and face away from the explosion.⸝
- Stay Sheltered:
⢠Remain in shelter for at least 24 to 48 hours.
⢠Radiation is most dangerous in the first few hours and decreases over time.
⸝
- Food and Water:
⢠Only consume food and water that is sealed or packaged.
⢠Avoid food and water left in the open, as it may be radioactive.
⸝
- Decontaminate Your Body:
If you were outside during the blast:
⢠Immediately remove your clothing and leave it outside.
⢠Shower thoroughly with soap and warm water.
⢠Clean nose, ears, eyes, and under your fingernails.⸝
- Stay Informed:
⢠Use radio or mobile devices (if networks are working) to receive official instructions.
⢠Follow all government or military guidance strictly.
⸝
- Before Going Outside:
⢠Only leave your shelter when authorities declare it safe.
⢠Wear a mask or wet cloth over your face.
⢠Cover your entire body with long sleeves, gloves, and other protective clothing.
⸝
- Long-Term Safety Measures:
⢠If available, use a radiation dose meter to measure radiation levels.
⢠If local water sources or crops are contaminated, seek alternative supplies.

BBC VerifyBBC Verify is analyzing footage that reportedly shows the wreckage and debris of Indian aircraft involved in attacks across Pakistan-administered Kashmir and other parts of the country.
One video, allegedly from the Pampore area in Indian-administered Kashmir, appears to show the remains of a fighter jetâs drop tank being recovered. These fuel tanks are released mid-flight to reduce aircraft weight, lowering the chances of being targeted.
Another video also from Pampore shows a different piece of a drop tank at another location in the same area.
Experts from the defense intelligence firm Janes believe these tanks are typically used in Dassault Mirage 2000 jets, which are operated by the Indian Air Force.
In another video post, a claim is made that debris from an unidentified missile was found near the village of Akliyan Kalan in Bathinda, a city in the Indian state of Punjab.
Justin Crump, a former British Army officer and head of the risk intelligence company Sibylline, stated that the debris appears to be from a French air-to-air missile. This type of missile is used in both Mirage 2000 and Rafale fighter jets.

âEvery drop of innocent blood will be accounted forâ: Pakistani Military Spokesperson
Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, spokesperson for the Pakistan Army, stated during a press conference that âEvery drop of innocent blood will be accounted for.â
He said that during the night of May 6th and 7th, India targeted innocent civilians and children. âIf this isnât terrorism, then what is?â he questioned.
The DG ISPR added that Pakistanâs armed forces, in response to Indian aggression, targeted military objectives â not children like India did. âThese were military targets aimed at threatening Pakistanâs sovereignty and citizens.â
He further stated, âThese innocent children, who had yet to see the joys of life â are they the terrorists India targeted on the night of May 6th and 7th? This is what you can expect from India. We have seen before how India promotes terrorism through its proxies, and the evidence is before the world.â
He emphasized that when the state of Pakistan began tightening the noose on terrorists, India responded by directly carrying out acts of terror through its military â targeting innocent civilians and children. âIf this isnât terrorism, then what is?â
He also said it has now been proven with evidence how India is involved in cross-border terrorism and killings, and this has been presented to the international community.
DG ISPR concluded, âThe Indian military has targeted mosques in various parts of Pakistan and desecrated copies of the Holy Qurâan. What kind of religion allows the desecration of other faithsâ places of worship and sacred scriptures?â

US âclosely monitoringâ tensions between India and Pakistan, in touch with both sides: US
A US State Department spokesperson has told the BBC that the US is âclosely monitoringâ tensions between India and Pakistan.According to the spokesperson, US officials are in contact with both countries and are urging them to âmove towards a responsible solution that ensures long-term peace and stability in South Asia.â
Earlier, BBCâs US State Department correspondent Tom Bateman said that the USâs failure to openly appeal for restraint after Indiaâs recent attacks, and leaving the vacuum for other countries, reflects the fact that US-India relations have grown in recent years, while Pakistan has remained relatively diplomatically isolated⌠a country with which the US has long had complicated relations.
Tom Bateman, in his analysis, said that the White House appears to be deliberately giving Delhi the freedom to respond freely. However, this policy may not last long.
As the airstrikes began last night, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed President Trumpâs statement, expressing hope that the conflict would âend soonâ and that the US would "work towards a peaceful resolution

Indian attacks are âshameful and cowardly aggressionâ targeting peaceful civilians: Ahsan Iqbal in conversation with BBC
Pakistani Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal, in an interview with the BBC, described Indiaâs airstrikes as âshameful and cowardly aggression,â which, he said, targeted âpeaceful civilians, including women and children.âSpeaking on the BBC World Serviceâs News Hour programme, Ahsan Iqbal said that Indiaâs claim that it had targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir was a âcomplete lieâ and that India was âtrying to mislead the world.â
He asked, âWho are the victims? Can a seven-year-old child be a terrorist? Can a five-year-old girl be a terrorist? Can a housewife be a terrorist?â
When asked about Pakistanâs response, Ahsan Iqbal said that the Pakistani government has given the armed forces âthe authority to determine the appropriate time and method themselves so that an effective response can be given.â

Blackout drill in Amritsar, citizens urged to stay indoors and keep lights off
Indian news agency ANI reported, quoting the District Public Relations Officer (DPRO) of Amritsar, that as a precaution, the Amritsar district administration has once again initiated a blackout process.Citizens have been asked to stay in their homes, not to panic, not to gather outside their homes, and to keep outdoor lights off.
The DPRO says that a blackout has been imposed once again in Amritsar to ensure the safety and preparedness of the people.
According to BBC Hindi, the blackout in Amritsar is part of a nationwide civil defense drill.
On May 7, a drill was conducted in all the countryâs 244 Civil Defense districts under the orders of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs.
State police forces, fire services, relief and disaster response teams participated in the drill, in view of the rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

Trumpâs cautious stance on India-Pakistan tensions: Is the White House giving Delhi a free pass?,Tom Bateman, correspondent for the US State Department
The White House is taking a hands-off approach to the crisis, as reflected in President Donald Trumpâs statement in the Oval Office on Tuesday: âThis is tragic.â
Today, President Trump called the situation ârevenge for retaliationâ and said he wanted it to stop, but he did not specify a way to resolve it.
The US State Department said only on Tuesday night that it was monitoring the situation but has not yet updated that statement.
The USâs failure to openly call for restraint after Indiaâs recent attacks, leaving the vacuum for other countries, reflects the fact that US-India relations have grown in recent years while Pakistan has remained relatively diplomatically isolated⌠a country with which the US has long had complicated relations.
It appears that the White House is deliberately giving Delhi the freedom to respond freely. However, this policy may not last long.
During the last major crisis between India and Pakistan in 2019, the Trump administration initially strongly supported Indiaâs stance on targeting militants carrying out attacks in Indian-administered Kashmir. But when the situation began to deteriorate rapidly, the US quickly began calling for a de-escalation.

Why was Pakistan unable to stop the missiles launched by India?
You may be familiar with Israelâs famous air defense system, âIron Domeâ or âDavidâs Slingâ, which is called the modern missile shield. Whether itâs a missile attack from Iran, rockets fired by Hamas, or drones fired by the Houthi rebels, these automated defense systems destroy them in midair as soon as they enter Israeli airspace.
In a war situation, the air defense system of any country is of great importance. The defense system includes anti-missile systems as well as radars and other devices that trace and track enemy aircraft.
Latest details on Pakistan-India tensions on BBC Urdu Live page
On the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, India claimed to have carried out attacks on âterrorist hideoutsâ at multiple locations in Pakistan and its administered Kashmir under âOperation Sindoor,â saying the operation was against those responsible for the killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam.
According to the Pakistani military, mosques and civilians were targeted in Pakistan and its administered Kashmir during the operation, which lasted from 1:05 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Although India did not specify what type of weapons were used in these attacks, Pakistani military spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that India carried out a total of 24 attacks using various weapons at six locations.
The Pakistani military spokesman also claimed that Pakistan had shot down five Indian Air Force fighter jets and a drone in retaliation for Indiaâs missile attacks.
Brahmos missile,Image sourceGetty Images
,Photo captionIndia did not say what type of missiles were fired.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that a missile from India has landed on Pakistani soil. In March 2022, a Brahmos missile from India also landed near the city of Mian Channu in Pakistanâs Punjab province. However, there were no casualties in this missile attack.Although India had said in a statement issued regarding the incident that the missile was accidentally fired towards Pakistan, Director General of the Pakistani militaryâs Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Babar Iftikhar, while briefing the media with details, said that the âIndian projectileâ that entered Pakistani territory was a surface-to-surface supersonic missile.
Pakistan claimed that initial testing showed that the missile was a supersonic cruise missile capable of traveling at three times the speed of sound, and that it remained within Pakistani territory for three minutes and 44 seconds before falling and crashing 124 kilometers inside the Pakistani border.
Pakistani military sources also claimed that Pakistanâs air defense system had started monitoring the missile from the moment it was launched from the Indian city of Sirsa. It was continuously monitored throughout its flight.
After the Balakot strike and the downing of an Indian plane in 2019, both countries have bought new defense equipment. For example, the Indian Air Force now has 36 French-made Rafale fighter jets. The Pakistani military claims that it shot down two Rafale jets in retaliation for the recent attack, but India has not confirmed this. Meanwhile, according to the London-based International Institute of Strategic Studies, Pakistan has acquired at least 20 modern J-10 fighter jets from China during the same period, which are equipped with PL-15 missiles.
As for air defense, after 2019, India acquired the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system, while Pakistan received the HQ-9 air defense system from China.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Pakistan Air Force said in a recent statement that its air defense capabilities include âadvanced aerial platforms, high-to-medium altitude air defense systems, unmanned combat aerial vehicles, space, cyber, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence-powered systems.â
After Indiaâs attack on Pakistan, some important questions have arisen: Is Pakistanâs air defense system capable of intercepting missiles coming from India to a large extent? And why was Pakistan unable to destroy the missiles launched from Indian airspace in the air before they reached their target?
Is Pakistanâs defense system capable of intercepting air-to-ground missiles?
Former Vice Air Marshal of the Pakistan Air Force, Ikramullah Bhatti, while speaking to the BBC, said that Pakistanâs air defense system has the capability to intercept short-range, medium-range and long-range surface-to-surface cruise and ballistic missiles. He said that Pakistan has included various missile systems in its defense system, including the Chinese-made HQ-16FE defense system, which provides Pakistan with the capability of a modern defense missile system and is effective against surface-to-surface missiles, cruise missiles and warships. However, when it comes to intercepting air-to-surface missiles, such a defense system does not exist.
Former Air Commodore Adil Sultan, while talking to the BBC, said that no such defense system has been created in the world that provides foolproof security, especially in a situation where countries like Pakistan and India, whose borders meet and in some places this distance is only a few meters, it is certainly impossible to prevent air-to-ground missile attacks 100 percent.
He said that every defense system has a limit to the ability to intercept what types of missiles it will be able to intercept if multiple missiles of different types are launched into the air from different directions at the same time.
He said that after the Balakot attack, Pakistan has added several modern missiles and radar systems and improved its defense capabilities.
He said that although these modern defense systems are very effective, it is not possible to install an air defense system on the more than 2,500-kilometer-long eastern border that would make it 100 percent possible that no missile could enter there.
According to Adil Sultan, doing so would require billions of dollars and would not be very effective due to the close proximity of the borders. He also claimed that India does not have such a capability.
Air attack
Ikramullah Bhatti said that if we talk about the incident of the night of May 6, we will have to understand some things. He said that these missiles were probably launched from air to ground by India, and if we talk about air-to-ground missiles, they have become very modern these days.
âTheir speeds have become very fast, ranging from Mach 3 (3,675 km/h) to Mach 9 (11,025 km/h), and no country, including the United States, Russia, or China, has the ability to stop or intercept such a high-speed missile.â
He said that another difficulty in stopping missiles fired from the air is that their flight duration is very short and you have very limited time to react, while on the contrary, ground-to-ground missiles can be stopped because their flight duration is long.
The former Air Vice Marshal also said that India does not have the defense capability to stop a missile launched from air to ground by Pakistan.
He said that if we talk about last nightâs incident, it was a similar case that Pakistan had very limited time to react and these missiles landed in Pakistan within a few moments.
Former Pakistan Air Force Air Commodore Adil Sultan said that no defense system in the world can 100 percent prevent attacks from geographically connected rival countries.
He said that however, it can reduce the damage. He said that the nature of the attack is also important for defense in such a system. If air-to-ground missiles are fired from different directions at the same time, it is somewhat difficult to identify them on radar and respond quickly.
Whereas if we talk about surface-to-surface missiles or cruise missiles, their deployment is known and you can cover their flight path or corridor.
He said that as Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said, about 70 aircraft participated in this attack by India, so if eight or nine missiles hit the ground in such a major operation, it is normal in a war situation.
Although the dropping of these few bombs has resulted in the loss of human lives, since India carried out this operation on a large scale, there will certainly be some fake attacks, so the dropping of these few missiles is not unusual in terms of warfare.
