When Iran launched another wave of attacks before dawn, loud explosions were heard in Jerusalem and air defense systems were activated.When Israeli officials yesterday declared the operation against Iran a “success,” they also signaled that the attacks could be the beginning of a long campaign and warned the public that large-scale Iranian retaliation was expected.
Israel says the campaign is aimed at damaging Iran’s nuclear program. Israeli officials believe Iran is currently in a vulnerable position. Its air defenses have been hit by airstrikes in the past year and its regional allies, particularly Hezbollah in Lebanon, have suffered heavy losses. Israeli officials say there is now an “opportunity” to act.
However, the intensity of the attacks suggests something else: the goal may not just be to damage nuclear facilities but to topple the Iranian regime. Last night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video message in which he directly addressed the Iranian people, urging them to rise up against their leadership.
“The aim of the Israeli military operation is not only to eliminate the nuclear threat, but also the ballistic missile threat. And while we are achieving our goals, we are also paving the way for your goal of freedom.”
This is perhaps the most worrying thing for the Iranian leadership, whose top priority has always been to ensure the survival of the regime. They are now under intense pressure and it is difficult to say whether these attacks will spark internal instability or an anti-government movement.
