Question No. 1: (5 marks) Assume, in a network, a switch runs for a very long time and it is used to share a link between the 4 concurrent connected connections i.e. W, X, Y and Z whose packets arrive in bursts. The link’s data rate is 1 packet per time slot. The average packet arrival rates of W, X, Y and Z in packets per time slot, are 0.4, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.2 respectively. The average delays observed at the switch are 5, 5, 10 and 10. Calculate the average queue lengths of the 4 queues (W through Z) at the switch. Note: Calculation steps are necessary to be shown. Question No 2: (5 marks) For P = 1011 and M = 1101000, find the CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check). Note: Calculation steps are necessary to be shown.

CS432 - Network Modeling and Simulation
Network simulation assignment question
P
Consider a network with three laptop computers. Computer 1 sends packets to computer 3 using wireless links. The two possibilities are: computer 1 sends directly to 3, or sends to 2 and 2 sends to 3. Based on the distances between the computers, we assume in this model that the Bit Error Rate (BER) for the link (1,2) and (2,3), respectively is denoted as BER(1,2), BER(2,3), and is equal to BER(1,2) = BER(2,3)=1/10*BER(1,3). Assume further that the packets that are received in error are retransmitted and are not removed from the head of the queue until correctly received. Assume computer 1 has to transmit a file that contains 10000 packets. Simulate the system and determine average end-to-end transmission delay for a correct reception for a packet at the destination, and the cumulative distribution function for the end-to-end delay for the two cases considered. For this file transfer application, in order to determine the end-to-end delay, you may consider that the file (all packets) is created at the beginning of the simulation (time 0), and the acknowledgement for a correctly received packet is instantaneous.

Rate = 3,500 kilograms per week (= 500 kilograms per day)
Average flow time = 2 days
                Average inventory = Rate x Average flow time = 500 x 2 = 1,000 kilograms
(Note that the variables are all in the same time frame i.e. days)

Sender and receiver are separated by two 1-Gigabit/s links and a single switch. The packet size is 5000 bits, and each link introduces a propagation delay of 10 microseconds. Assume that the switch begins forwarding immediately after it has received the last bit of the packet and the queues are empty.

Assume that the switch begins forwarding immediately after it has received the last bit of the packet and the queues are empty.

For each link, it takes 1 Gigabits/5 Kbits = 5 microseconds to transmit the packet on the link, after which it takes an additional 10 microseconds for the last bit to propagate across the link. Thus, with only one switch that starts forwarding only after receiving the whole packet, the total transfer delay is two transmit delays + two propagation delays = 30 microseconds.
