US âclosely monitoringâ tensions between India and Pakistan, in touch with both sides: US
A US State Department spokesperson has told the BBC that the US is âclosely monitoringâ tensions between India and Pakistan.According to the spokesperson, US officials are in contact with both countries and are urging them to âmove towards a responsible solution that ensures long-term peace and stability in South Asia.â
Earlier, BBCâs US State Department correspondent Tom Bateman said that the USâs failure to openly appeal for restraint after Indiaâs recent attacks, and leaving the vacuum for other countries, reflects the fact that US-India relations have grown in recent years, while Pakistan has remained relatively diplomatically isolated⌠a country with which the US has long had complicated relations.
Tom Bateman, in his analysis, said that the White House appears to be deliberately giving Delhi the freedom to respond freely. However, this policy may not last long.
As the airstrikes began last night, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed President Trumpâs statement, expressing hope that the conflict would âend soonâ and that the US would "work towards a peaceful resolution

Indian attacks are âshameful and cowardly aggressionâ targeting peaceful civilians: Ahsan Iqbal in conversation with BBC
Pakistani Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal, in an interview with the BBC, described Indiaâs airstrikes as âshameful and cowardly aggression,â which, he said, targeted âpeaceful civilians, including women and children.âSpeaking on the BBC World Serviceâs News Hour programme, Ahsan Iqbal said that Indiaâs claim that it had targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir was a âcomplete lieâ and that India was âtrying to mislead the world.â
He asked, âWho are the victims? Can a seven-year-old child be a terrorist? Can a five-year-old girl be a terrorist? Can a housewife be a terrorist?â
When asked about Pakistanâs response, Ahsan Iqbal said that the Pakistani government has given the armed forces âthe authority to determine the appropriate time and method themselves so that an effective response can be given.â

Blackout drill in Amritsar, citizens urged to stay indoors and keep lights off
Indian news agency ANI reported, quoting the District Public Relations Officer (DPRO) of Amritsar, that as a precaution, the Amritsar district administration has once again initiated a blackout process.Citizens have been asked to stay in their homes, not to panic, not to gather outside their homes, and to keep outdoor lights off.
The DPRO says that a blackout has been imposed once again in Amritsar to ensure the safety and preparedness of the people.
According to BBC Hindi, the blackout in Amritsar is part of a nationwide civil defense drill.
On May 7, a drill was conducted in all the countryâs 244 Civil Defense districts under the orders of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs.
State police forces, fire services, relief and disaster response teams participated in the drill, in view of the rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

Trumpâs cautious stance on India-Pakistan tensions: Is the White House giving Delhi a free pass?,Tom Bateman, correspondent for the US State Department
The White House is taking a hands-off approach to the crisis, as reflected in President Donald Trumpâs statement in the Oval Office on Tuesday: âThis is tragic.â
Today, President Trump called the situation ârevenge for retaliationâ and said he wanted it to stop, but he did not specify a way to resolve it.
The US State Department said only on Tuesday night that it was monitoring the situation but has not yet updated that statement.
The USâs failure to openly call for restraint after Indiaâs recent attacks, leaving the vacuum for other countries, reflects the fact that US-India relations have grown in recent years while Pakistan has remained relatively diplomatically isolated⌠a country with which the US has long had complicated relations.
It appears that the White House is deliberately giving Delhi the freedom to respond freely. However, this policy may not last long.
During the last major crisis between India and Pakistan in 2019, the Trump administration initially strongly supported Indiaâs stance on targeting militants carrying out attacks in Indian-administered Kashmir. But when the situation began to deteriorate rapidly, the US quickly began calling for a de-escalation.

Why was Pakistan unable to stop the missiles launched by India?
You may be familiar with Israelâs famous air defense system, âIron Domeâ or âDavidâs Slingâ, which is called the modern missile shield. Whether itâs a missile attack from Iran, rockets fired by Hamas, or drones fired by the Houthi rebels, these automated defense systems destroy them in midair as soon as they enter Israeli airspace.
In a war situation, the air defense system of any country is of great importance. The defense system includes anti-missile systems as well as radars and other devices that trace and track enemy aircraft.
Latest details on Pakistan-India tensions on BBC Urdu Live page
On the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, India claimed to have carried out attacks on âterrorist hideoutsâ at multiple locations in Pakistan and its administered Kashmir under âOperation Sindoor,â saying the operation was against those responsible for the killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam.
According to the Pakistani military, mosques and civilians were targeted in Pakistan and its administered Kashmir during the operation, which lasted from 1:05 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Although India did not specify what type of weapons were used in these attacks, Pakistani military spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that India carried out a total of 24 attacks using various weapons at six locations.
The Pakistani military spokesman also claimed that Pakistan had shot down five Indian Air Force fighter jets and a drone in retaliation for Indiaâs missile attacks.

,Photo captionIndia did not say what type of missiles were fired.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that a missile from India has landed on Pakistani soil. In March 2022, a Brahmos missile from India also landed near the city of Mian Channu in Pakistanâs Punjab province. However, there were no casualties in this missile attack.Although India had said in a statement issued regarding the incident that the missile was accidentally fired towards Pakistan, Director General of the Pakistani militaryâs Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Babar Iftikhar, while briefing the media with details, said that the âIndian projectileâ that entered Pakistani territory was a surface-to-surface supersonic missile.
Pakistan claimed that initial testing showed that the missile was a supersonic cruise missile capable of traveling at three times the speed of sound, and that it remained within Pakistani territory for three minutes and 44 seconds before falling and crashing 124 kilometers inside the Pakistani border.
Pakistani military sources also claimed that Pakistanâs air defense system had started monitoring the missile from the moment it was launched from the Indian city of Sirsa. It was continuously monitored throughout its flight.
After the Balakot strike and the downing of an Indian plane in 2019, both countries have bought new defense equipment. For example, the Indian Air Force now has 36 French-made Rafale fighter jets. The Pakistani military claims that it shot down two Rafale jets in retaliation for the recent attack, but India has not confirmed this. Meanwhile, according to the London-based International Institute of Strategic Studies, Pakistan has acquired at least 20 modern J-10 fighter jets from China during the same period, which are equipped with PL-15 missiles.
As for air defense, after 2019, India acquired the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system, while Pakistan received the HQ-9 air defense system from China.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Pakistan Air Force said in a recent statement that its air defense capabilities include âadvanced aerial platforms, high-to-medium altitude air defense systems, unmanned combat aerial vehicles, space, cyber, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence-powered systems.â
After Indiaâs attack on Pakistan, some important questions have arisen: Is Pakistanâs air defense system capable of intercepting missiles coming from India to a large extent? And why was Pakistan unable to destroy the missiles launched from Indian airspace in the air before they reached their target?
Is Pakistanâs defense system capable of intercepting air-to-ground missiles?
Former Vice Air Marshal of the Pakistan Air Force, Ikramullah Bhatti, while speaking to the BBC, said that Pakistanâs air defense system has the capability to intercept short-range, medium-range and long-range surface-to-surface cruise and ballistic missiles. He said that Pakistan has included various missile systems in its defense system, including the Chinese-made HQ-16FE defense system, which provides Pakistan with the capability of a modern defense missile system and is effective against surface-to-surface missiles, cruise missiles and warships. However, when it comes to intercepting air-to-surface missiles, such a defense system does not exist.
Former Air Commodore Adil Sultan, while talking to the BBC, said that no such defense system has been created in the world that provides foolproof security, especially in a situation where countries like Pakistan and India, whose borders meet and in some places this distance is only a few meters, it is certainly impossible to prevent air-to-ground missile attacks 100 percent.
He said that every defense system has a limit to the ability to intercept what types of missiles it will be able to intercept if multiple missiles of different types are launched into the air from different directions at the same time.
He said that after the Balakot attack, Pakistan has added several modern missiles and radar systems and improved its defense capabilities.
He said that although these modern defense systems are very effective, it is not possible to install an air defense system on the more than 2,500-kilometer-long eastern border that would make it 100 percent possible that no missile could enter there.
According to Adil Sultan, doing so would require billions of dollars and would not be very effective due to the close proximity of the borders. He also claimed that India does not have such a capability.
Air attack
Ikramullah Bhatti said that if we talk about the incident of the night of May 6, we will have to understand some things. He said that these missiles were probably launched from air to ground by India, and if we talk about air-to-ground missiles, they have become very modern these days.
âTheir speeds have become very fast, ranging from Mach 3 (3,675 km/h) to Mach 9 (11,025 km/h), and no country, including the United States, Russia, or China, has the ability to stop or intercept such a high-speed missile.â
He said that another difficulty in stopping missiles fired from the air is that their flight duration is very short and you have very limited time to react, while on the contrary, ground-to-ground missiles can be stopped because their flight duration is long.
The former Air Vice Marshal also said that India does not have the defense capability to stop a missile launched from air to ground by Pakistan.
He said that if we talk about last nightâs incident, it was a similar case that Pakistan had very limited time to react and these missiles landed in Pakistan within a few moments.
Former Pakistan Air Force Air Commodore Adil Sultan said that no defense system in the world can 100 percent prevent attacks from geographically connected rival countries.
He said that however, it can reduce the damage. He said that the nature of the attack is also important for defense in such a system. If air-to-ground missiles are fired from different directions at the same time, it is somewhat difficult to identify them on radar and respond quickly.
Whereas if we talk about surface-to-surface missiles or cruise missiles, their deployment is known and you can cover their flight path or corridor.
He said that as Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said, about 70 aircraft participated in this attack by India, so if eight or nine missiles hit the ground in such a major operation, it is normal in a war situation.
Although the dropping of these few bombs has resulted in the loss of human lives, since India carried out this operation on a large scale, there will certainly be some fake attacks, so the dropping of these few missiles is not unusual in terms of warfare.

âAn explosion was heard in the area after the drone crashedâ
Reports of drone downing have been coming in from various parts of Pakistan since Thursday morning, following Indiaâs attacks on Pakistan and its administered Kashmir between Tuesday and Wednesday night.
A Pakistani military spokesman said on Thursday afternoon that India had again violated Pakistani territory and sent drones towards Lahore, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Attock, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Mianwali and Karachi, which were destroyed.
Ghotki SSP Samiullah Soomro told BBC correspondent Rohan Ahmed that the drone crash occurred on Thursday morning in Kenjo, which is 50-60 kilometers from the Indian border.
SSP Samiullah said, âSome farmers were sitting on the ground and one civilian was killed and another was injured when the drone fell.â
According to the BBCâs Rohan Ahmed, a drone also crashed in the Sharafi Goth area of ââKarachi.
Pakistani media also circulated news of a drone being shot down in the Walton area of ââLahore on Thursday morning, and footage of the area showed vehicles from the bomb disposal squad, fire brigade, and Rescue 1122.
In Punjab itself, there were reports of a drone crashing in fields under the Dohman police station limits of Chakwal district. According to local journalist Nabil Anwar Dhakou, the drone crash occurred near Ghanwal village at around 6 am.
According to journalist Nebel Anwar Dhakou, âAn explosion was heard in the area after the drone crashed. Villagers rushed to the spot. After some time, security forces personnel and local police also reached the spot. However, there was no loss of life due to the drone crash because the drone had crashed in a field.â
A drone has also crashed in a food street in Rawalpindi, the twin city of Pakistanâs capital Islamabad. According to reports, the drone caught fire after it crashed, after which law enforcement officials have sealed the scene.
On the other hand, according to the local police of Gujranwala, a drone was shot down in the Tokaan area of ââWahindu police station and the droneâs debris was also found in the fields.

India did not target Neelum-Jhelum Dam, says Foreign Secretary
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in a press conference on Thursday that the Neelum-Jhelum Dam was not targeted during Operation Sindoor. It should be remembered that Pakistanâs military spokesman, DG ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, had also claimed in a press conference after Indiaâs attack on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir that India had damaged the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project and that targeting a hydro project was unacceptable and dangerous.
However, Indiaâs Foreign Secretary has dismissed this claim as false, saying that âIndia only targeted targets that were related to terrorism.â
When asked during the press conference about Pakistanâs claim of shooting down Indian Air Force planes, he said that the answer will be given at the right time. He was also asked whether India has information that any big name involved in terrorism was killed in Operation Sindoor, he said that at this time they do not have such information.
In response to another question, he said that Operation Sindoor was carried out by India in response to the Pahalgam attack and now India does not want to escalate the conflict further.
It should be noted that Pakistan has expressed its disinterest in the Pahalgam attack.
Indiaâs Foreign Secretary said that if any action is taken by Pakistan, it will be responded to.
When asked about the communication between the offices of the national security advisers of the two countries by Pakistanâs Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, he said that he did not have any information about this at this time.

The story of Pakistanâs attacks in India is fabricated, 29 drones have been shot down, DG ISPR
Ishaq Dar,Pakistan Army Spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif has said that âthe news of Pakistanâs attack on 15 locations in India is false. The Indian government is putting on a show for its own benefit. However, when Pakistan attacks, it will be visible and will resonate, so we will not need the Indian media to tell us.â
âWe have a close eye on the eastern border and every moving object is being monitored and shot down,â DG ISPR said while holding a press conference with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday.
He said that last night, âfour projectiles, which appeared to be missiles, were seen from Indian airspace. Three of them were shot down by India within its own territory in Amritsar, while one crossed the border and came towards Dinga area of ââGujrat district of Pakistan, which was shot down.â
They said that a forensic examination is being conducted, only after which it can be said whether it was a missile or something else.
He further said that Indiaâs claim is based on lies because âwhen any missile is fired, it leaves its digital traces. If 15 locations were attacked, there would definitely be evidence of it.â
Talking about the drones sent by India to Lahore, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Attock, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Mianwali and Karachi, including other areas, violating Pakistani airspace on Thursday, he said that several armed Indian drones violated Pakistani airspace at several places and Pakistan shot them down.
He claimed that the total number of Indian drones shot down has reached 29.
DG ISPR, while talking about the Harpoon drones, said, âIndia sent Israeli-made drones thinking that they were small and would not be seen. We are watching them all. We knew where and how to shoot them down. There is a method to shoot them down. We have shot down 29 drones and only one drone succeeded in achieving some of its objectives, as a result of which some Pakistani equipment was damaged.â
He also claimed that âone of these drones was also sent to target the holy site of the Sikh religion in Nankana Sahib.â
On this occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said that Indiaâs claim of attacking military installations is a blatant lie. He said, âWhat India has done today by sending drones to two dozen places inside Pakistan from Islamabad to Karachi is regrettable, shameful and condemnable.â
He said that âIndia also tried to target the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.â
He said, âPakistan shot down five Indian warplanes. They are probably not digesting this and are doing these things to relieve their embarrassment.â
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said that a story was created by India that Pakistan had again carried out attacks inside India last night in violation of international laws.
He said that âPakistan did not take action in any urban area of ââIndian Punjab and, as a responsible country, exercised all possible strategic caution.â
Ishaq Dar said, âPakistan is committed to protecting its citizens. Citizens do not need to panic. Pakistanâs armed forces are committed to defense.â

The Pakistan Stock Market recorded a major decline of 6,482 points in the index at the end of trading on Thursday.
A sharp bearish trend was recorded during trading and after a decline of 6948 points, the buying and selling of shares had to be suspended when the index fell to 103505 points.
According to the countryâs stock market rules, trading in the market has to be suspended for 45 minutes if the index drops by five percent or increases by five percent in a day.
The index fell another 8,400 points after the market resumed trading after a break, but it saw some recovery before the close of business and the index recorded a decline of 6,482 points when the market closed.
According to stock market analysts, business started positively this morning and the index recorded an increase of 1850 points. However, after Indiaâs drone attacks on Pakistan, the market came under pressure and investors sold shares in panic, which led to a large decline in the index.
Analyst Jibran Sarfaraz told the BBC that âtensions between Pakistan and India have increased after the drone attacks, which has put pressure on the market and led to a sell-off in shares in the market.â
He said that there was a positive trend in business in the morning, but after the drone attacks, the trend in the market became negative and investors saw increased selling of shares.
Analyst Ahsan Mehanti said that the reason for the market downturn is the increasing tension between Pakistan and India, which led to the market index recording the highest single-day decline.

What is the Israeli-made Harpoon drone shot down in Pakistan and why is it difficult to detect in the air?
Nearly 36 hours after India launched missile strikes on several areas of Pakistan and its administered Kashmir, tensions between the two countries escalated once again when the Pakistani army claimed to have shot down several drones during Indiaâs attempts to infiltrate various Pakistani cities.
A statement issued by the Pakistani military on Thursday claimed that 25 Israeli-made Herop drones have been shot down so far through soft kills (technical means) and hard kills (weapons).
Earlier, a Pakistani military spokesman said that âIndia again violated Pakistani borders and sent drones towards Lahore, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Attock, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Mianwali and Karachi, which were destroyed.â
On the other hand, after Pakistan claimed to have infiltrated India through drones and shot down several drones during the operation, India said that this action was in response to Pakistanâs attempt to target Indian installations on the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
There has been no response from the Pakistani military or government to the Indian claims so far, however, on Thursday afternoon, a Pakistani military spokesman claimed that Lahore was among the areas in which Indian drones were shot down.
In all this, we try to find out what Harpoon drones are? Why are they difficult to detect on radar? And what could be Indiaâs purpose in sending drones into Pakistan?
